When he was receiving treatment in a Chicago hospital earlier in 2008 following a fall in Baltimore, Maryland, there were untrue claims that he had passed away. Yet he was able to go back to Pakistan, his country of origin. Shibli Faraz, Ahmad Faraz’s son, revealed that his father passed away on August 25, 2008, in an Islamabad private hospital, due to kidney failure. At H-8 Cemetery in Islamabad, Pakistan, his funeral was held on the evening of August 26 in the presence of several admirers and government representatives.

He is recognized as one of the most significant contemporary Urdu poets of the 20th century and is listed among the many revolutionary poets of the Urdu language.
