Early Life

On December 4, 1951, Gary Rossington was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in the United States. Rossington sadly lost his army-serving father not long after he was born. Rossington was entirely raised by his mother, and the two of them had a wonderful relationship. Later, he gave his mother “Berniece” as the name of his first, lavish guitar.

Rossington had a passion for baseball as a child and fantasized about playing for the “New York Yankees.” Yet he was curious about “The Rolling Stones'” significant influence on him as a teenager. He ultimately made the decision to pursue music as a professional career.

Curiously, the members of “Lynyrd Skynyrd” came together through a shared love of baseball. Despite playing for different Jacksonville clubs, Rossington, Van Zant, and Bob Burns played baseball together.

The three of them once made the decision to jam together, and soon after the session, they decided to start their band. The group was once known as “The Noble Five” (with Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom making up the other two members), but eventually went by the name “The One Percent.” The band finally decided on the name “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1969, also going by the name “My Backyard” at the time.

With his work as the lead guitarist in “Lynyrd Skynyrd Live “‘s performances and records, Rossington rose to prominence in the musical world. ‘Free Bird’ and ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ were two of their well-known songs.

A 1959 Gibson Les Paul that Rossington had christened “1959 Gibson Les Paul” after his mother was his favorite instrument. He is renowned for some of his incredible guitar playing in songs like “Simple Man” and “Tuesday’s Gone.”

The band had a tour planned for the week after Labor Day weekend in 1976 when they were already rather well-known. Rossington was involved in an accident over the weekend when his recently purchased “Ford Torino” collided with an oak tree.

Rossington was intoxicated and using narcotics at the time of the collision. The band assessed him a $5,000 punishment for the delay in the tour that he was responsible for. This event served as the inspiration for the song “That Smell,” which was composed by Van Zant and Collins.

When Rossington was hurt in the same plane crash that killed the other members of “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1977, his career came to an abrupt end. On October 20, 1977, a plane crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi, killing all but Rossington. Rossington was knocked out by the hit and when he came to, he discovered himself under the plane’s door. In the “freak accident,” he had broken his arms, legs, wrists, ankles, and pelvis.

Rossington returned to performing on stage while wearing steel rods in his right arm and right leg after overcoming his physical injuries and the emotional agony of losing his comrades. He was still struggling with drug addiction, though, and his reliance on painkillers had made it worse.

The Rossington Collins Band was the name of the group that Rossington and Allen Collins created in 1980. They put out two records. Whenever, Anyplace, Anywhere, the first one, was well appreciated. When Collins lost his wife, the band broke up in 1982.

The Rossington Band, which consists of Rossington and his wife Dale Krantz-Rossington, was established in 1986. The first of their two albums came out in 1986, and the second in 1988.

‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ was reformed in 1987. Rossington joined their three-year-long tribute tour. Since then, Rossington has been performing with the reformed “Lynyrd Skynyrd.” The only original member currently connected to the group is keyboardist Billy Powell, who passed away in 2009.
