Early Life

Syed Mohammad Waris Shah was a well-known Sayyid family member who descended from Sayyid Muhammad Al-Makki through his son Sayyid Badruddin. He was born in Jandiala Sher Khan, Punjab, modern-day Pakistan. His mother was Kamal Banu, and his father was Gulsher Shah. Waris’ parents allegedly passed away when he was a little boy.

Waris looked for the ideal spiritual mentor for years. Waris Shah recognized that he had acquired his education from Hafiz Ghulam Murtaza, an ustad from the Kasur region. Waris relocated to Malka Hans, a community twelve km north of Pakpattan, after completing his studies. Until his passing, he remained in this location in a compact room close to the old mosque now known as Masjid Waris Shah.

Waris Shah was also present when Afghan leader Ahmad Shah Abdali launched his initial invasion of India. He saw the Battle of Lahore, in which Afghan soldiers faced off against Shah Nawaz’s Mughal forces, which led to Lahore falling under Afghan control in January 1748.

Shah Nawaz’s conduct during the conflict was denounced by Waris Shah, who even called him a coward. In the course of history, several poets eventually added their own verses to Qissa Waris Shah. The number of falsified verses in the widely accessible Qissa Waris Shah is believed to be 11069. The Punjab Public Library in Lahore has one of the earliest and most accurate copies of Qissa Waris Shah, which Kripa Ram published in 1916.

Education

The details of Waris Shah’s education are sketchy. However, it is generally accepted that he had a traditional Islamic education, which at that time in the region was the most common kind.

Waris Shah would have learned the fundamentals of reading, writing, and Islamic religious studies as a young boy. The Quran’s language, Arabic, as well as Islamic scriptures and practices, would have been covered in this schooling.

Waris Shah may have had some instruction in Persian, which was a popular literary and cultural language in the area at the time, in addition to his Islamic education. Persian literature had a big impact on Punjabi literature, and many of the poets there were bilingual.

Waris Shah’s poetry compositions, especially “Heer Ranjha,” demonstrate his profound familiarity with and comprehension of literature, folklore, and Sufi traditions. His grasp of the English language and ability to express complicated thoughts in clear but moving verses point to a high level of literary and cultural education.

Beyond the fundamental principles of Islam, Waris Shah’s official education is not clearly documented. His connections with intelligent people and immersion in the cultural milieu of his age are thought to have helped him develop much of his poetic skill and literary brilliance.
